MJB Berricans are new LHCL 2008 Champions

On a bright Sunday, following several days of rain, MJB Berricans of Grand Bay defeated Bafondpointe of Bagatelle by nine wickets to capture the Lambert Henderson Cricket League championship this year. Ezikel Francis took 3 wickets and Bernard Titre took 2. Martin Matthew scored an unbeaten 41 to lead Berricans to 82 for one and hence to victory.

Following the match, a prize-giving ceremony was held. Urban Baron, parliamentary representative of the Petite Savanne constituency and sponsor of the Petite Savanne team. John Roach chaired the ceremony.

Ian Munroe and Patrick Henderson reflected on the personality of Lambert Henderson and called on the young men to emulate his good qualities. Mr. Munroe pledged the continued support of the Lotteries Commission for the league but would have liked to see more young men participating.

Hon. Urban Baron called on the Bagatelle team to work harder in order to emerge champions. He offered to assist in getting the Bagatelle field improved so that young people in that area could practice. He encouraged the young people to take the sport seriously.

Receiving individual trophies were Athanaze Matthew of Unity A for most wickets and MVP, Brian Defoe of Unity B for the most runs, Bonnel Henderson for best fieldsman, Cyrus Edwards for best wicket-keeper. Bafondpointe won the Ball-o-rama trophy and league runners up while MJB Berricans won the LHCL championship.

Basketball League Opens under flood lights at Ma Tutu’s Park.

On Sunday 20th July, 2008, the Lambert Henderson Basketball League 2008 was officially opened under the lights at the improved Ma Tutu’s Park. President of the league committee Lenny Dangleben expressed the hope that the discipline of the players involved would be very high this year compared to last year so that there could be a cordial conclusion to the league. He lamented the fact that due to some indiscipline of some players last year, the league was not concluded.

Chairman of the Grand Bay Village Council Willie Fevrier urged players to take care of the improved facility in the park. He recalled the various organizations that had contributed to the park’s development. The court, he reminded the audience, was a contribution of the US Peace Corps when volunteer Eric Barbee lived in the community. The lights were contributed by the French Embassy in Castries and the most recent project to construct the wall fence was a contribution of the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives. Mr. Fevrier urged players that their contribution should be to maintain the facility to the highest level. He called on the audience to pay the entrance fee so that the committee will be able to pay for the electricity consumption and to effect repairs when these become necessary.

Patrick Henderson, representing the family of the deceased Lambert Henderson after whom the league is named, called on players to adhere to the rules of the sport and to work hard on their game as Lambert himself did. Patrick was particularly pleased with the presence of a ladies team. He called on the girls to work hard and try to beat one of the men’s teams. He offered to get a ladies’ team from Marigot to play the South City girls’ team.

Ian Anselm moved the vote of thanks and Reynold Alcendor chaired the function.

Following the function, there was a slam dunk competition and a ball-o-rama.

South-East Cable and Wireless Rounders League opens in Grand Bay.

On Sunday 20th July, six rounders teams from Castle Bruce/Tranto, Delices, Boetica, and Grand Bay participated in the official opening of the rounders league at the Geneva Playing field. Addressing the opening ceremony, Mr. Abraham Brown, the organizer from the South-East Sports Committee, declared that 2008 was the thirteenth year of the league and throughout these years, Cable and Wireless has been the sponsor. He thanked the sponsors and all others who made it possible for this rounders competition to be kept alive.

Chairman of the Grand Bay Village Council Willie Fevrier welcomed the participants and expressed his joy at the fact that the sport of rounders gave women an opportunity to be physically active in sport. He said that given the problem of chronic non-communicable diseases that were affecting our society, physical exercise was a must if we were to mitigate the effect of these diseases.

Also addressing the participants was Miss Ferdina Frampton, representing Cable and Wireless. Miss Frampton expressed her pride that her company continued to sponsor that league and said that she was satisfied with the progress of the league.

Eight teams are expected to participate in the league.

Cricket Round Up

Lambert Henderson League

In the Lambert Henderson Cricket League played last weekend, Unity A of Hagley defaulted against Bafondpoint on Saturday 17th. It is reported that only five players of Unity A showed up for the match.

On Sunday, in brilliant weather, Taverners had it easy against Urban Baron Rivals of Petite Savanne. Batting first, Taverners were in trouble as Cyrus Edwards was bowled by the first ball of the match, fired in by Germaine Moses. Taverners then lost another three wickets cheaply including those of prolific batsmen Chico and Irving Shilllingford. However, two fine partnerships between Thomas Kentish (29) and Tilson Benjamin (38) and Tilson and Reginald Darroux (34) helped Taverners reach an impressive 154 for 7 wickets in 40 overs. Bowling for Rivals Raphael Laurent took 4 for 16 and Germaine Moses 2 for 34.

When they batted, Baron Rivals only scored 51. For Taverners, Oswin Alie took 5 for 9 and Delbert Benjamin 2 for 21. Taverners won by 107 runs.

First Division Cricket

In the Augustus Gregoire Cricket League played at the Botanic Gardens on Saturday 17 and Sunday 18, Grand Bay Credit Union Colts were badly beaten by the defending champions Desederata Tremors of Pointe Michel/Soufriere. Batting first Colts made 142 with Benson Baron getting 24 and Michael Moses 22. Martin Matthew took 6 for 52. When Tremors batted, they piled up 373 with Mervin Matthew hitting 141 not out, Junior Xavier 61 and Ezikel Francis (now playing for Tremors) 57. Bowling for Colts, Alvinson Jolly got 5 for 65 and Chis Alexander 2 for 80. Batting a second time, Colts put up some resistance through Bonnel Henderson 61, Brian Bellot 38, Benson Baron 37 and Shaun Baron 23 to score 204, thereby losing by an innings and 27 runs.

Grand Bay Colts should not be discouraged as it is a young team and their resistance in the second innings should give some hope for the future. However, their bowling in Tremors innings was awful. The guys need to work on bowling, fielding and catching.

Basketball League Opens with Ballorama

This year the Basketball committee has decided to honour ex-island player Lambert Henderson by naming the league after him. It is now called the Lambert Henderson South City Basketball League. At the opening ceremony on Saturday, July 28, Mr. Lenny Dangleben, chairman of the organizing committee said that they felt it fitting to name the league after one of the finest sportsmen Grand Bay had ever produced. He called on Lambert’s widow, Margaret Rose Henderson to declare the season of basketball open. Prior to this, Pastor Jean-Jacques of the Pentecostal Church and a player on the Sweat Beggars team prayed that the season would be successful, followed by some remarks by chairman of the Grand Bay Village Council, Willie Fevrier. Mr. Fevrier reminded players that the Bata Pros and Heineken Pros teams of the 1980s were a formidable team and won the national knock-out championship in 1983. He declared that the Eagles team of Paix Bouche in the north won the national championship the night before at Goodwill. He felt that it was time for the championship to return to the south. He encouraged all players to work at improving the skills if they were to reach the top.

It was a pleasure to welcome at the park Dr. Kinnard Leatham, a member of the formidable team of the 80s, on a visit to his homeland.

The following 9 teams were on show: West Side, Young Guns, BMF, Tete Morne, Sweat Beggars, Rastas, Dubic, Young Stars and Bellevue.

West Side won the ballorama competition, defeating Tete Morne in the final, thus signaling their intention to retain the championship. However, they met with some tough opposition by the Tete Morne team. It will be a hot basketball season.

0000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000

Colts disappointing year 2007

This year the Grand Bay Credit Union Colts cricket team performed well below average and won only one match out of four played. However, there were promising individual performances. This is the first year that two Colts batsmen scored centuries in the Premier League. Ezikel Francis made 115 against Dublanc and Kade Brown 124 against Police. Juan Francis also played extremely well this year registering about three half centuries in six innings. In the bowling department, Ezikel Francis consistently took wickets and Alvinson Jolly was a good complement in most matches. The pace attack was very deficient, perhaps contributing to the poor performance of the team.

It is unfortunate that now that the team has access to concrete pitches to practice even in wet conditions, the players do not turn out to practice. Alick Rapha, the coach makes himself available but the youngsters complain that they are tired after a day’s work and cannot go to practice. This is really unfortunate, as, in the past, cricket practice was a means of recreating after a hard day’s work! How can these players ever improve if they do not make the time and expend the energy in practicing and working on their weaknesses? The team is made up of some very talented players but if they continue to ignore the value of regular practice, they will not get any better and in fact will continue to decline in their performance. Rare individual performances will not lead to a successful team. To be successful, every individual has to play his part and the full team has to work together with one purpose.

Grand Bay Credit Union Colts suffer heavy defeat

In a first division cricket match between Grand Bay Credit Union Colts and Grand Bazaar Dublanc, the latter batted first and posted 412 runs with Shane Shillingford scoring 175 and Balty Watt 108. Ezikel Francis, captain of Colts took 5 wickets for 98 runs and Brian Defoe 3 for 101. Colts replied with 229 with Ezikel Francis scoring 115 and Bonnel Henderson 26. Ray Casimir took 5 for 62. Trailing by 183 and following on, Colts folded for a meager 139 with Juan Francis got 53 and Ezikel Francis 23. Shane Shillingford captured 7 for 41runs. Dublanc therefore won by an innings and 44 runs.

It is heartening to see that some of the Dominican batsmen are getting big scores. Three centuries were scored in this match. All three batsmen have represented Dominica in regional tournaments.  It is also heartening that Juan Francis has been quite consistent, scoring his third half century in four innings. Let us hope that the Colts team will build on their success and learn some lessons from their failures.
