Featuring Dr. Lennox Honychurch, Bernard Wiltshire & Noreen John
History Night was exhilarating
A community center packed with residents and visitors alike listened with rapt
attention to the various speakers as they provided different insights into some aspects of the history of GrandBay. Paul (Lawa) Alexander started the ball rolling with his own reminiscence
of the sometimes turbulent, sometimes constructive era of the 1970s. He was followed by Noreen John Delsol who examined some
of the economic aspects of GrandBay
history, in particular how the women of the community contributed to the development of the community. Then Dr. Lennox Honychurch
looked at the early settlement of GrandBay
and its implications for the diverse culture of the community. Then the highlight of the evening was the reflection on the
events of 1974 when the Geneva Estate was wrested from the possession of one land owner. Bernard Wiltshire led this discourse
but he was assisted by Philip Baron (Souflet) who was a key player in that revolution. Their verbal contributions were enhanced
by the presence of Philip Francis (Unicef), the leader of the revolution and other people who actually participated in that
event. Bernard proclaimed Unicef a true hero who liberated the people of GrandBay from a state of landlessness. He referred to 1974 as the beginning
of a new GrandBay
and said that that event was the single most important event in the economic history of the community.
The large appreciative crowd was absorbed in the discussion and must have learnt
a great deal about the Geneva revolution of 1974 (sort of
from the horse’s mouth).
The meeting was chaired by John Baptiste John (Holeday).

Grand Bay Reunion 2006
Recognition & Presentation Ceremony
Awards ceremony was spectacular
On Tuesday 1st August, 2006, some of the most illustrious sons and
daughters of GrandBay were recognized for their contribution
to their community, their country or for their personal achievement. The purpose of the recognition ceremony was not only
to acknowledge the worthy men and women but to inspire the younger people in our community to aim for high achievement and
to impress on them that it is possible for them to achieve at a high level.
The ceremony was unique in that the citations were read by students of the
Primary and Secondary school and the awards were given in several categories. Some of the awards were presented by the New
York Reunion committee. Others by the GrandBay
Committee. But there were two special “life time awards” presented to Dr. Max Hilaire of the younger generation
and His Excellency Dr. Nicholas Liverpool, President of the Commonwealth of Dominica, both born and bred in Lallay, GrandBay. All Grand Barians are proud of the achievements of these intellectuals

Symposium:
"Grand Bay, Prospects for Development"
Symposium attracted excellent presentations
On Monday, July 31, some forty people gathered for the Symposium on “Prospects
for the Development of Grand Bay”. After some brief opening statements by His Excellency Crispin Gregoire, Ambassador
to the UN, Mr. Bernard Wilshire examined the economic history of the GrandBay area, focusing on the role of
the estates and the ultimate disappearance of this role from 1974 revolution at Geneva.
He asserted that the removal of the owners of the Geneva estate and the subsequent redistribution
of the estate was a major turning point in the economic history of GrandBay. It allowed the small farmer to own land, to build decent homes and
it allowed an expansion of the village. He stressed the need for Dominica
to continue on the path of the preservation of its natural resources rather than going along with short-term projects that
could have a lasting negative impact on the environment.
Following this discussion, presentations were heard on Tourism, the Banana
Industry, The Grand Bay Credit Union and the AID Bank’s Geneva
project.Mr. Sobers Esprit, manger of the Community Tourism project described
the tourism project executed by the Grand Bay Tourism and Environment Committee (GTEC) at Geneva.
He also disclosed that the expansion of that project and other ideas were included in a national tourism plan which is being
developed.
Mr. Michael Roberts, chairman of the National Fair Trade organization, maintained
that in spite of the difficulties in theBanana Industry, there was a future
in the Banana Industry. He talked also of the contribution that the Fair Trade made to the community in its Social Premium
program.
Mrs. Germaine John Philip, manager of the Credit Union disclosed that the Grand
Bay Credit Union was growing and had assets of over seven million dollars. She mentioned some of the services that were offered
and praised the membership for having the lowest delinquency rate in loan repayments among Credit Unions in Dominica.
Mr. Belon Fontaine of the Fond
St. Jean Fisheries Cooperative gave a brief history of the cooperative and disclosed its level
of success. He urged GrandBay
young people to be involved in the fishing industry as it could be very lucrative. He asserted that the Fond St. Jean cooperative
was supplying fish for the entire southern district and sometimes to Roseau
and the Eastern district. He felt assured of the viability of the cooperative.
In the afternoon session, His Excellency Crispin Gregoire examined the various
possibilities for economic development in the southern district, including tourism, manufacturing, fishing, art and craft
and the music/entertainment industry. He saw a role for the diaspora in the development of proposals and for investment in
some of these areas.
Mr. Ian Williams of the AID bank then outlined the bank’s plans of establishing
two sheds on the land at Geneva designated for industrial
development. He said that the plans were drawn up but some difficulty was encountered in choosing the location of the sheds
since the preferred spot was occupied by a squatter. He disclosed, however, that some alternatives were being examined and
that construction should begin before the end of the year.
Dr. Peter St.
Jean then talked of his research into community/police relation in GrandBay which he documented in his book, “Lessons from GrandBay”. He concentrated on the relationship between economic development
and community safety. He disclosed that the crime statistics which he examined did not reflect the negative perception that
people had of GrandBay.
All in all, the symposium was very informative but the attendance was disappointing
as only about 40 people attended.

Opening Grand Bay Reunion Ceremony
Opening Ceremony was hit by rain
On Friday July 28, the official opening of the Grand Bay Heritage and Reunion week took place
on the Pierre Charles boulevard under some light showers. Before this official part of the activity, visitors gathered at
Tete Lallay carrying flags of the different countries from which they came and danced their way down Lallay to the Boulevard
to the strains of the Reunion songs and Sakis Lapo Cabwit band. When they got to the Boulevard,
they were addressed by the Chairman of the Grand Bay Village Council, Willie Fevrier, the Parliamentary Representative Hon.
John Fabien, His Excellency Crispin Gregoire, Ambassador to the UN, the Minister for Community Development Hon. Matthew Walter
and the Hon. Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit. In their addresses, they bade all visitors welcome and emphasized the important
role that Grand Bayrians who live abroad play in the development of their community and their country. Mr. Fevrier said that
Grand Bayrians took care of their relatives and this was evidenced by the number of barrels that were sent home during festive
seasons. Hon. John Fabien threw out the challenge to the overseas Grand Bayrians to think about the possibility of supporting
a project to establish a home for the aged in the southern district. His Excellency Crispin Gregoire spoke of the opportunities
that could be explored by Grand Bayrians coming together to form a group as they had done in New York. Hon. Matthew Walter praised Grand Bayrians for their upholding the nation’s
cultural heritage and Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit suggested that a fund should be established by overseas Grand Bayrians
to support local projects.
Following these speeches, solidarity messages were heard from the UK, Canada, USVI and USA represented by Clancy, Frances Delsol, Paul Alexander and Pauli St. Hilaire respectively.
Some entertainment punctuated the event until His Excellency the President
Dr. Nicholas Liverpool declared open the Grand Bay Heritage and Reunion week. The entertainment
continued as the Tradibelle Cultural group put on some sterling performances of the Belaire dance.
Then the official guests were entertained at a cocktail at the PierreCharlesSecondary School.
The large crowd of Grand Bayrians and visitors alike were then taken back to
the village by the Sakis band where the entertainment continued.

Pre-Reunion Feel the Spirit of Lord Tokyo
On Thursday July 27th Grand Bayrians and friends gathered at the Old Fort for a Pre-reunion concert
with performances by Michele Henderson, Tarina, Ophelia, Jahlee, Dice and Lord Tokyo. The MC for
the night was Alex Bruno and backed up by the Michele Henderson Band. The show kicked off with Tarina's "Wouldn't it Be
Nice" and her popular Bishop song. Tarina was shouted back on stage for an encore. Grand Bay's shining
star, Michele Henderson, backed by her band took to the stage cheered on by onlookers. Ophelia, La Dame Antilles,
sang one of her popular renditions and "Hypnotic" from her new album. Jahlee, daughter of the soil, performed
two songs from her new album. The three time reining Calypso King Dice brought the crowd to life with
his popular songs and jumpin' rhythm. The well known "Little Pumpin' Man" Lord Tokyo, from Pichelin, brought down the
curtain on the nights event when he did his popular "Tennis Shoe Tounge." Lord Tokyo came back on stage after the crowd shouted
for an encore. The show finished a little after 1 AM with jovial Grand Bayrians and friends requesting more performances.

Beach Clean-up
On Monday July 24th, Michele Henderson, family and friends rallied for a beach clean-up beginning at
Deaux Pond to beautify for Reunion. The amount of garbage by the bay amazed clean-up crew as they picked
up 170 bags of rubbish. Volunteers agreed that people in Grand Bay must break the bad habit of throwing rubbish into
the river. It flows right down into the bay and instead of going out to sea collects in massive piles of rubbish that is unhealthy
and unattractive. The clean-up crew asks that we keep the bayside clean by placing rubbish out for the garbage
trucks that come twice weekly. Keep our Nature Isle clean and green! Thanks to all the volunteers that helped make the
beach clean-up successful.

Reunion Committee receives funds
Toronto Grand Bay Reunion BBQ
The Grand Bay (UK) Dominica Community Alliance has made a donation of one thousand
pounds (EC$4,835.50) towards the Reunion events. This group of mostly Grand Barians living in London,
has always supported the community in many different ways. The group has provided scholarships for students to attend secondary
schools, sent used but functional computers and books to various schools and village councils, supplied equipment such as
a brush cutter, mower, and fridges to the Grand Bay Sports Committee and a concrete mixer for the Grand Bay Village Council
among other things. This latest contribution will be essential in defraying the cost of the Reunion.
The funds were raised through the celebration of the Feast of St. Isidore in London.
The GrandBay
community as a whole is grateful for this contribution.
In the meantime, the group of Grand Barians in Toronto
held a bar-b-q to raise funds for a particular project in GrandBay. It is reported that the event was a success as it was well attended
and supported.
On the local front, the FirstCaribbean International Bank made a donation of
$1,000 towards the Reunion event. The manager indicated that he would like these funds used
in support of cultural or educational activities of the Reunion.
The Grand Bay Credit Union has also made a contribution of $2,000 towards the
Reunion.
The Government of Dominica has approved the resurfacing of the Chemin Cabway
road and work has already started on this project. The Parliamentary Representative Hon. John Fabien has pushed hard for the
Back Street roads and Chemin Cabway to be resurfaced and the Government has responded. The completion of this project will
improve the circulation of vehicular traffic through the community.
We are all grateful for all the help that the community is getting from various
sectors. We look forward to the Reunion activities and the full participation of all.

Back Street gets a face lift
The narrow winding roads from Morine to Mabouchay are poised to be renewed.
This week, as a result of a project of community enhancement funded by the Government of Dominica, through the efforts of
the Parl. Rep, work has commenced on providing a brand new surface on the roads in Back Street. The Grand Bay Village Council
has been charged with the responsibility of implementing the project while the Ministry of Public Works and Public Utilities
provides the supervision.
Two teams of workers under the direction of Councilors Frederick Toussaint
and Timothy Noelrespectively are moving the project forward quite briskly. The
work entails providing a 4 inch concrete surface dressing, widening where necessary or possible, and improving the drainage.
The young and enthusiastic workers are working hard, and by all reports are producing some good work.
Before the project started, the Council held a public meeting at Morine to
inform residents of the development and to solicit their cooperation. So far, that cooperation has been evident. The road
will be closed for the next two weeks to allow the concrete to settle adequately.
The Council now invites residents to plant hedges and flowers and beautify
their surroundings so as to further enhance the Back Street area. The new surface on the road provides a golden opportunity
to totally refresh Back Street and to maintain its beauty.

Pre-Reunion Braff on the Boulevard was big on Saturday 29th April
The fund-raising
event on the Pierre Charles Boulevard on Saturday night was well attended. The Triple K band from
Roseau brought with it its large band of youthful followers
from all over the island. The number of vehicles parked from the Geneva Playing field to Deux Ponds, on both sides of the
boulevard was evidence that most of the crowd came from outside of GrandBay. What a great time they had.
After a late start,
the band played for four hours from 11pm to 3am, having a section of the crowd jumping and waving their rags.
The variety and
quantity of braff available seemed to have been adequate. There was fish, pig snout, chicken, back & neck, smoked pork
braff, steamed fish, barbequed chicken and lots of Heineken beer. The vendors
must have made a good buck that night.
If this pre-reunion
event was so big, imagine how the Reunion braff on the boulevard will be!
Thanks to the sponsors
Josephine Gabriel and Co, agents for Heineken beer for their support of this event. Thanks to the many volunteers who assisted
in the bars, who made braff to sell and thanks to this particular lady who, without being asked, sent a bum of braff to sell
for the fund-raising committee. It is this type of community spirit that will make the Reunion
a success.
