Cultural Groups in and around Grand Bay, Dominica

Awards, Started, History, Members, ...

DATE FORMED----- July 1981

Tradibelle means beautiful tradition. The word is derived from the two words (1) Tradition and the French word “Belle” meaning beautiful. The Group’s immediate objective was to dance beautiful traditional Bčlč.

“They thrill the hearts of their audience wherever they perform- from Sout City, Grand Bay, the seat of culture in Dominica comes Tradibelle, one of the most popular groups on the island.” (Rabess: 1985, p. 10)

It all started in July 1981, when six (6) young people were selected from the village of Grand Bay to participate in the Summer’s Festival in Quebec, Canada sponsored by the (A.C.C.T) Countries.

After what proved a very successful tour, the group returned with an ultimate motive to prove the standards of the traditional Bčlč dance in Dominica and henceforth, Tradibelle’s tentacles spread captivating the young and talented and developing the potential of it’s members.

By September of 1981, Tradibelle was no longer a micro-organization but a fifteen (15) strong cultural group. Its greatest debut for 1981 was seizing first and second prizes respectively in Adult and Children Bčlč Competitions and also the popularity gained throughout the independence Celebrations 1981 did not hinder the group’s progress and with all enthusiasm captured the first prize in the Christmas Sewenal Competition.

The Year 1982 saw Tradibelle promoting traditional dance through various workshops and the Bčlč dances were introduced to students of the Convent High School, Kubuli Dance Company, People’s Action Theatre and participants at the Government sponsored summer course in folk dancing.

Tradibelle celebrated its first anniversary with a week of activities which included, shows, meeting and cultural workshops. However, through perseverance and continuous efforts was very successful in the 1982 Independence Competitions, attaining first prizes in Drama, Group Patois Song and Adult Bčlč, Creative Dance and Patois song individual.

Also of importance is the fact that Tradibelle was part of a tourist promotion team to Martinique in September 1982 organized by the Dominica Tourist Board and performed in Grenada during the Carnival Summer’s Festival 1982.

The main interest of Tradibelle is traditional Bčlč and a constitutional to discipline every member mentally, physically and culturally in order to help improve Dominica’s Cultural awareness and Heritage.

The Group has continued its cultural spree locally, nationally, regionally and internationally. The group was awarded the Leblanc Trophy in 1983 for their outstanding performance in the field of culture.
Tradibelle as a versatile group entertains with dance, song, and drama at inauguration ceremonies, exhibitions, private parties and important personalities. They performed for the Queen during her 1985 visit to Dominica. As a group member pointed out “Bčlč shall surely survive”. This speaks encouragingly for the survival of Bčlč in Grand Bay.

History of group.

Before 1967, Petite Savanne did not officially have a cultural group. At that time belle, mazouk, and so on, were danced by the elder folks. However the younger people were into contemporary dance and music of the time and they refuse to participate in the traditional dances as we know them today. That’s spelt our culture and hence, the chief minister of the cultural competition.
The Petite Savanne Cultural Group was organized to participate in that competition. On their very first position they won, they attained first position and for two consecutive years there after. The group members then decided to stop competing to allow other villages to develop their skills and to meet their standards. This cultural group has done the hat trick at winning the quadrille no less than three times. The group has developed and researched all the cultural dances that were done in the Petite Savanne area.
The research was undertaken by the leadership of the Morne Topie group which is from a small hamlet in Petite Savanne, organized itself to learn the cultural dances. From this enterprise two new groups emerged are the children and the group.
At the time the Petite Savanne cultural group was going through a crisis, they did not have sufficient as well as sufficient musicians. The cultural group approached the Morne Topie group and negotiated to merge, the rest is history. Due to the Morne Topie group these new dances were researched and introduced, lanses, hand spy, mazouk a la Wallace, bagine and latae. The group does the following dances. Wallace, quadrille, lanses, belle, mazouk a la pis de chien, mazouk yon pas, heel and toe, floatation, soutis, handspy, latae Wallace ou vien, English mazouk, mazouk a la Wallace, mazouk piche pulca a la melegae.
