It will also include an Inspector's quarters, interview room, charge office and cells. The project is funded by the Government and people of Venezuela through the ALBA arrangement. In his feature address, the Prime Minister made it clear that the Government of Dominica would strengthen legislation to deal with the issue of possession of illegal firearms. Eight solar fruit dryers built at Grand Bay

We hear much talk about renewable energy but in Grand Bay last week, there was action on the issue. Eight solar fruit dryers were built from Thursday to Saturday last week as approximatley ten people from the south of the island engaged themselves in a training program organized by the Grand Bay Village Council. An enthusiast and researcher in solar energy offered to train Dominicans in the technology of solar dryers. Mr. Alec Gagneau from Europe was visiting Dominica for the past month and conducted training in Roseau and Grand Bay. He conducted the training for three days at the workshop of Mr. Philip Nelson at Geneva. At the end of the training the participants had built eight solar dryers which they hope to put into use immediately.

The whole idea of the solar dryer is to preserve some of our fruits when in abundance for the days when the fruit is no longer available. For example there is much wastage of mangoes when the fruit is in season and after the mango season, it is very scarce. By drying strips of the fruit in an inexpensive way, mangoes can be eaten after the mango season.

The participants who came from Roseau, Bellevue, Bagatelle, Marigot and Grand Bay were challenged to experiment with different fruits and share their results with one another.

At the end of the workshop, participants expressed great satisfaction with the training and they all expected to put their newly acquired skill of solar fruit drying to good use. In addition the building of the solar dryer was another new skill acquired by the participants.

Alec( as he is preferred to be called) is a resident of Switzerland who was invited to visit Dominica by another renewable energy friend who had visited Dominica before and was fascinated by the beauty and natural endowments of the country.

Mr. Laville inspects progress on project

Morpo Road Rehabilitation is in progress

The Government of Dominica, through the Hon. Parliamentary Representative Justina Charles, has made a sum of $200,000 available to the Grand Bay Village Council for the rehabilitation of the Morpo/Mocanton road. The Council has contracted Mr. Shane (Fatboy) Alexander to implement the project. Work started on July 5th and is progressing satisfactorily. Mr. John Laville, engineer of the Local Government Department and Mr. Willie Fevrier, Chairman of the Village Council visited the project to assess the progress being made. They expressed satisfaction with the work that has been undertaken so far. While the funds are insufficient to do a complete resurfacing of the feeder road, the approach being used by the contractor is to tackle the most critical sections of the road which were virtually impassable by vehicular traffic. Several culverts have been opened up and drainage has been improved in many sections. The project is expected to go on for about three months.

It is hoped that upon completion, the improved road will entice farmers to return to farm at Morpo and Mocanton. One notes that as the older generation of farmers retire, few of their sons and daughters do farming. Some mechanism must be found therefore to get interested people to farm the very good land that is available in that area. Let us hope that the young men of Grand Bay will take up the challenge and make Morpo and Moncanton the bread basket of the south as it was at one time.

Pierre Charles Day Celebrated

On Wednesday June 30, the Pierre Charles Secondary School celebrated Pierre Charles Day under the theme, "Hard Work Yields Success". Mr. Deon Anselm, headboy at the school welcomed the audience to start proceedings. This was followed by a prayer service led by His Grace Archbishop Kelvin Felix, parish priest of Grand Bay. After the final blessing, the audience was entertained by two short stories and a rendition of the song, "To Dream the Impossible Dream"  by Michele Henderson. The feature address was given by Mr. Patrick Hhenderson, long time friend of Pierre Charles. In his speech, Mr. Henderson chronicled Pierre Charles' progress from his boyhood to his position as Prime Minister of this country. Mr. Henderson concluded that Pierre Charles' achievements were gained by hard work. He encouraged students to emulate the attitude and work ethic of the late Prime Minister and they will achieve a degree of success.

During the ceremony, the widow of the late Prime Minister, Mrs. Justina Charles who is also the parliamentary representative of the constituency, presented two scholarships to primary school students entering the Pierre Charles Secondary School starting in September 2010. She also donated a power-wash machine for cleaning the yard.

Finally, the audience was invited to view the exhibition of art, garments, craft and many other items on display.

FEAST OF ST. ISIDORE IN GRAND BAY

The feast of St. Isidore celebration in Grand Bay was colourful and innovative. The mass at the St. Patrick's Roman Catholic Church was celebrated by His Lordship Bishop Gabriel Malzaire, assisted by Parish Priest Archbishop Kelvin Felix, Father Peter and Father Cuffy. Many parishioners attended the mass during which farmers offered some of the products of their toil in the offertory procession. The entrance hymn was coreographed by the Grand Bay Cultural group while the offertory procession was led by Tradibelle. At the end of the mass, five farmers were rewarded for their persistence in farming over the years. Among them was Mr. Cyprien Henry of Grand Bay and Mrs Lucy Liverpool and Lucille Liverpool of Tete Morne and Grand Coulibrie respectively.

Grand Bay, also called South City, the cultural capital of Dominica, is a vibrant community located along the Atlantic ocean coast in the south-east of Dominica. To its immediate south across the sea is the island of Martinique.

The village is surrounded by several scenic mountain ranges including Bois Den to the south, Palmiste to the west, Morne Plat Pays to the north-west, Morne Anglais and Morne Watt to the north, Foundland range to the north east and east. Nestled along the slopes of these mountains are the villages of Bellevue, Pichelin, Montine, Tete Morne, Grand Coulibrie, Dubique and Stowe. The main community of Grand Bay is characterized by its long narrow street called Lallay, on both sides of which the largest population resides. In addition there is Mabouchay, Back Street, Hagley, Wavin Banan, Powell and Beikua, making up the older residential area. Since Hurricane David in 1979, the village has extended to include the new communities of Geneva, Highland,Bala Park and Bolom. The total population is about 3000.

The people of Grand Bay are known to uphold the cultural heritage of Dominica in dance, music, art & craft and language. The Cadence music, the creole language and many other traditions are part of the daily life of the community.

The economy is based manily on agriculture with the production of a variety of root crops, bananas, other fruits and vegetables for the local and overseas market. There is a small furniture manufacturing  industry and many small shops and snacketes. Some people engage in the production of craft items for tourists and locals alike and recently, a small cottage soap making plant was established at Geneva.

The Grand Bay Village Council is the local government authority in the community. The coucil is made up of five elected and three nominated members. The clerk of the council is the only full-time employee.
